Review for Indian Restaurant Shilpa in London

Just this past Saturday, around the same time, my travel companion and I had dinner at the Indian restaurant Shilpa on King Street in London.

Before we left Frankfurt, we looked at quite a few restaurant recommendations on King Street and chose Shilpa for its good reviews. King Street has a big selection of ethnic restaurants to choose from (Lebanese, Moroccan, Indian, etc). I say big selection, because I live in a German town with a population of only 44.000 residents and just a few ethnic restaurants.

It was early Saturday evening, so there was only one other table seated with guests.

We chose Lamb Roganjosh and Chicken Tikka Masala, with a Pappadam set for starters.

It took quite a while for our food to make it to our table, but we used our time wisely and comforted our hungry stomach with beer and wine, respectively.

The Chicken Tikka Masala was good, but the Lamb Roganjosh was better. I had assumed it came with rice, so when we were asked whether we’d like to have bread or rice with our meals, we ordered rice. Surprisingly, this was charged extra at  £ 3 a bowl.

Our waitress was very patient and friendly. Her service almost made us feel like we are at home (without my teenage kids bickering, that is). I felt like I could have asked her for just about anything, and she would have delivered.

Service definitely gets *****, the food was good, but less would have looked more appetizing. We really enjoyed our Pappadam set (£ 2 ) with the various dips and chutney.

I can recommend it if you like a simple ambiance, value good service, and enjoy big meals at decent prices.

Craving Ethnic Food – from Oberursel to London

About twice a month, I manage to get away for an extended lunch break. This usually takes me to Seoul Restaurant in Oberursel, where I tend to order the same food, Kimsambok, to take care of my craving for Kimchi.

Next weekend, I will be in London looking for a good Indian restaurant between the Hammersmith Apollo and our hotel on 44 Glenthorne Road, preferably in walking distance. London is the best place to enjoy Indian food.

On a funny note, I had asked one of my Indian friends for a restaurant recommendation in London and of course, she would not really know. She said, when she wants good Indian food, she eats at her mother’s house :-).

But I managed to get the name of an gastropub with an outdoor terrace upstairs. Hop Poles got reasonable priced drinks and British food. If all works well, we get an Indian dinner somewhere, and then hop to Hop Poles for the outdoor beer experience.

If there are no further recommendations for Indian dining, I will get a recommendation from the London hotel receptionist and take a taxi there. I would not like to leave London without a gourmet experience. I’m spoiled, aren’t I.

Review for Indian Food at Bella Italia in Oberursel

This mainly Italian restaurant Bella Italia  is run by a German/Indian husband/wife team with a couple of helpers for deliveries. Service is always excellent and we just love their Indian food! There is a wide selection of Italian food to choose from, along with one page of Indian dishes as well as some German dishes.

During our very first visit there, we had the typical month of May dish Asparagus with Potatoes as advertised on the roadside board. We did not even bother looking at the menu.

On our next visit there, we discovered a fairly good selection of Indian food in the menu. I settled for the Chicken Karma (# 165), while my husband opted for the Lamb Karma (#171).

This was excellent! What at first looks like a small portion served in the hot pot turns out to be more than plenty. We were also served a plate of vegetables with chutney, bread and dip as well.

The average wait for the main dish is about 40 minutes, I’d say. So plan a bit of time and enjoy the nibbles.

The interior is simple with a rustic touch, but comfortable. Prices are moderate.
