Maria’s Beer Balcony in Germany

In mid-November, I had two friends here from London for a weekend visit to Frankfurt, and of course we got together on the beer balcony.

Dilshini, a German with Sri Lankan roots, and Harjit, a Brit with Indian roots.

Dilshini and I have known each other through her time at Frankfurt International School (FIS), and I met her husband, Harjit at one of the FIS reunions in Oberursel. The last time we saw each other was in May 2013  in London at their wedding at the Gherkin on the 40th floor. This time, we met a bit closer to the ground. 🙂

Maria’s Beer Balcony in Germany

Spring has come! Actually it has been here for a while, since my hyacinths and daffodils started sprouting in early February and now they are just about to bloom. What a mild winter we’ve had.

My longtime friend Udo contacted me since he was passing through the Frankfurt area and we arranged for a little get-together this past Sunday, which included the notorious “Why don’t you sit on the balcony with me for a photo?” Needless to say, this little tick of mine has attracted quite a few visitors.

I made Krautspudel (a very Franconian dish) for dinner, we caught up with the past few years in which we had little contact, and rekindled our friendship.

Having friends is so important (next to good health, such as sitting on the balcony in fairly cool weather…).  This one’s for you, Udo.

Maria’s Beer Balcony in Germany

This beer balcony visit has probably been the last one for this season. The weather was very mild at 19°C yesterday. After our initial beer on the balcony, we went to the local pizzeria and we were even glad to have the pizzeria’s door remain open!

Andrea and I have known each other for almost 30 years. My my my, we do go back a long time. Even though they live around the area, we get to see each other only a few times a year.

Cheers to the next 30 years of our friendship!

Maria’s Beer Balcony in Germany

Well, as it was only late afternoon, we sat on the balcony with coffee and juice. Yes, that’s possible too.

My former student and friend Dong Yeon, a Middlebury student (Vt in the USA), but now attending the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität (Mainz), came by for a visit.

We had not seen each other for six years, so when Dong Yeon arrived in Germany on 8 October, we planned our get together. We spent a couple of hours at the school’s Applefest, took a walk through the forest (a very German thing to do), and ended up on the balcony for more conversation.

It is so good to see our friends again.

A friend is someone who understand your past, believes in your future, and accepts you today just the way you are.

Maria’s Beer Balcony in Germany

It is mid-September, and evenings on the balcony can be still pleasant around here. Here I am with Marianne, my “oldest” friend from Oberursel. We had met the same year when we moved here 18 years ago.

Over the years, with changes in work schedules and family needs, we’ve had fewer chances to meet. So, when we do meet, there is usually quite a bit of catching up to do.
