Bike Race Through Oberursel on 1 May 2022

We long-term residents of Oberursel are familiar with this annual event. For the newcomers to Oberursel and vicinity, this might prove to be a challenge to get in and out of Oberursel on that day. Some roads will be blocked for traffic as early as 8:53, and some until 13:16.
From my experience, it is best to leave your home around 8:00.

These roads will be affected:

  • Waldlust-Hohemark
  • Im Heidegraben/Hohemarkstraße
  • Altkönigstraße/Steinmühlenweg
  • Hommkreisel
  • Oberhöchstädter Straße/An der Heide
  • Gablonzer Straße/Zimmersmühlenweg

For more detailed information, visit this interactive map, and you can plan your day accordingly. Click on ‘Anwohnerinformation’, then activate ‘Schleusen’. This way, you can see where and what time the bike race is coming through.

Solar Eclipse and Brewing Beer in the Dark on the the Faroe Islands

Back in 2008, I visited my friend Mariann on the Faroe Islands and fell in love with the landscape, the shores, and the islands’ serenity.

Mariann just sent me this notification. For those of you with limited Faroese language skills, here is the English version of the announcement (source: VisitFaroeIslands on Facebook) for the Total Solar Eclipse and beer drinking happening on 20 March 2015.

Vagar Airport, the international airport in the Faroes, is located on the island of Vágoy.

The Total Solar Eclipse, which this year can only be seen in the Faroe Islands and Svalbar, is only 33 days away!

Føroya Bjór, a Faroese brewery, have produced a limited edition Solar Eclipse beer.

What’s special about the beer is that it is brewed only in complete darkness and when there is a full moon. The raw materials used are distinct. The water is Faroese, and there are three different types of beer- and wheat malt.

The beer is spiced with special hops imported from New Zealand called Nelson Sauvignon, which relates to the grape of the same type. The beer is golden like the sun, and leaves a dry aftertaste, making it resemble white wine.

If you’d like to come and enjoy a one-in-a-lifetime experience (and some Faroese beer), there are still flights, ferries and accommodation available.

Christmas Tree Pick-up Oberursel 2013

This coming Saturday, 12 January 2013, Christmas trees will get picked up again.

Either throw it off the balcony (like we do every year) from your apartment building or, if you live in a house, just drag it to the roadside.

Christmas trees in Germany get recycled. Most of the wood is turned into wood chips, so I’ve been told.

Clocks change from DST to Normal Time

Most of you know by now. But just in case – this weekend, clocks change from daylight saving time (DST) to normal time 2 a.m. Sunday morning (28 October). Be sure to set your clocks back one hour.

Relish the extra hour of sleep.
