Farewell to Schweinfurt U.S. Military

This is for all the U.S. troops who had been stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany or had passed through it on their tour.

For a trip down memory lane, watch this clip Abschied der US-Armee aus Schweinfurt (U.S. Army farewell from Schweinfurt).

Schweinfurt Military Housing – Askren Manor

Much has been said and written about the closing of Ledward and Conn Barracks in Schweinfurt, one of the largest U.S. American bases in Germany, which is to be completely carried out by 30 September 2014. This post is about Askren Manor, the housing which is supposed to get completely torn down.

Askren Manor is the largest on-post housing area  with 674 stairwell apartments as well as 26 duplexes, all in within walking distance to Ledward Barracks. Other facilities include  the elementary school, commissary, school age services, and the child development center.

We had spent another weekend in Schweinfurt and on our way home again, we were heading towards Niederwerrner Straße, where we stopped for a photo on the side gate. The mesh wire fence has become almost obsolete by now.

We are approaching the corner of Niederwerrner Strasse and John-F.-Kennedy-Ring.

Just passing by some of the buildings on the John-F.-Kennedy-Ring. Too bad we had the Grüne Welle (synchronized traffic lights) and could not slow down, which made some photos a bit blurry.

The latest I heard was to turn Askren Manor into a completely new housing development and Ledward Barracks becoming a sister college (i-Campus) to FHWS Würzburg.

Quoted from the article: Im Herbst sollen die ersten Studenten für den FHWS i-Campus der Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften (FHWS) nach Schweinfurt kommen….”

(Starting with the fall semester 2014, the first 100 students are expected to enroll at the i-Campus University of Applied Sciences in Schweinfurt.)

Schweinfurt Military Closing and Future Photo Exhibition

I found the following call for photo donations on American Soldiers Monument in Schweinfurt via Facebook.

Quoting from their page:

“In response to the pending closure (Fall 2014) of US Army Garrison Schweinfurt, the garrison public affairs office is trying to establish a photo exhibition chronicling the history of the Army in Schweinfurt. But due to the lack of an existing archive, they need your help. So we are putting out the call for photos to be donated to the exhibit.

They are especially looking for photos that prominently display landmarks of the various installations, the local training area, past units, etc. For more information about the project or to donate your photos, please contact the USAG Schweinfurt PAO Office at

usarmy.schweinfurt.imcom-europe.mbx.pao@mail.mil

Or post them here and we will send them in for you. Try to include a DTG and a little background info on the photo if you can (where, what, who, etc). When the project is done they will post everything on Flickr and we’ll share the link with you guys. Thanks everyone for your help.”

American Military Honored in Schweinfurt

Today, on Veterans Day, a small town in Germany added a bit of its own touch to honor all the U.S. soldiers having served in Schweinfurt, Germany. The city has had two U.S. army posts – Ledward and Conn Barracks. Erecting this moment on German ground symbolizes peace and friendship, and honors all who served.

This has also been a great accomplishment for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). This is the first time ever a monument has been erected outside of a military post, said Armithea Sissy Borel, guest speaker and vice-president of the National VWF women’s group. She also thanked the city of Schweinfurt for a partnership lasting almost 70 years.

This monument honors all U.S. soldiers who have served their country (and ours) in more than sixty years. Credit also went to the partnerships and friendships between the Americans and the locals over the years.

Also present were the VFW commander Sean Hillyer and the very last U.S. post commander, Michael Runey. Both emphasized the friendship between the U.S. and Schweinfurt as well as the longest period of peace in history. By the time the U.S. military pulls its last troops in 2014, the mission has been accomplished – to see Germany through the Cold War.

The monument is located in the Alte Friedhof (Old Cemetery), which is also the final resting place for about 40,000 locals.

The eagle, designed by the local artists Steff Bauer and Sören Ernst, is not only representative of the United States eagle, but is also the heraldic charge for both Germany and Schweinfurt.

A little souvenir from the Schweinfurt military post (1990).
