Aerial Views over Askren Manor and Ledward Barracks, Schweinfurt

These photos of Akren Manor and Ledward Barracks have been given to me by the photographer, Thomas Liepert, and are now published with his friendly permission.

The first three photos were taken by Thomas taking a ride on the Ferris Wheel at the annual Volksfest (01 – 11 June 2018).

The following photos were taken around the same time, but obviously closer to the ground.

House 460 at Askren Manor in Schweinfurt, Germany

In my line of work, I run across some interesting research inquiries. One of my readers would like to know more about the history of the house 460 at Askren Manor, which he purchased in 2016 (after the U.S. Military left in September 2014, and the installation was returned to the German government)An. With his permission, I publish the photos he mailed me to help with the research.

This is what the new owner, Thomas S., has to say:

I grew up near Schweinfurt (village of Arnstein) and two years ago, I bought a house at Askren Manor. It’s the one next to the General’s house (the army number was 460). Unfortunately, not much remains of its old army history these days. I really would like to find out more about what happened here within the last 70 years. I would be very interested in knowing more about the house’s history, its former tenants, photos, etc.

If by any chance, you know someone who lived in house 460, have any photos of it from before 2016, or used to play with the kids from house 460, etc., please get in touch with me. Any information would be appreciated. I will then connect you with Mr. Thomas Siebert. He would love to hear from you.

Askren Manor, Schweinfurt in December 2017

While visiting family around the Schweinfurt area, we passed by Askren Manor housing today. This has turned into a ghost town.

An article from the Main-Post Newspaper from February 2017 had stated that 28 of the 34 apartment buildings would be demolished by the spring of 2018.  The design for the new German housing development includes room for 1600 residents.

We passed on the east side of Askren Manor (up ahead is the John-F-Kennedy-Ring), where nothing had been touched yet.

Once the plans for this new housing development have been carried out, there will be room for about 1600 new residents.

Plans for Askren Manor, Yorktown, and Kessler Field, Schweinfurt

The former U.S. military housing Askren Manor in Schweinfurt is getting an almost complete overhaul. Years of wear and tear, as well as asbestos (banned from usage in 1993) have left their marks.

Of the 36 blocks, six are supposed to remain and have a complete restoration done. The city of Schweinfurt plans on rebuilding a new housing area, complete with shopping facilities, kindergarten, and an elementary school (replacing the old school with its two gyms).

On Kessler Field, the former high school building, built around 1987/1988, got renovated about 10 years ago. Now it is being used by the International School Mainfranken (ISM) located in Kalifornienstrasse 1.

Then there is Yorktown housing, which has been sold off to private investors. Some of the semi-detached houses are being restored and up for sale.
