The Faroe Islands
While my trip to Japan is only four weeks away, I have already booked my next one and this time my flight will take me to the Faeroe Islands in May 2008.
Curious? The Faroe Islands are located 450 km south of Iceland and 322 km north of the Shetland Islands.
I would not be going there if I didn’t have a special reason, which is to visit a friend of mine I have not seen in 16 years. We met in the United States and then our ways parted as she was moving to Denmark and I was in the process of moving to Japan.
This will be a fantastic experience to get to know one part of the world where not many people have traveled before (except Ingmar Bergman, who had a recluse on one of the ten islands).
What do I expect? I don’t know. I imagine it to be windy, experience four long days of daylight in May, eat seafood, and have a good reunion with my dear friend Mariann.
The link A comprehensive introduction to the Faroes (Faeroe Islands) I found very useful and interesting.
With Lufthansa I will fly to Kopenhagen/Denmark and with the largest Faroese airline, Atlantic Airways, I will make it to the Faroes.
Have you ever been there? Do you know anyone who has ever been there? Would you like to travel there? Leave a comment!

Edit: An attentive reader pointed out the following – Ingmar Bergman was a recluse on Fårö, an island off the coast of Sweden, not the Faroe Islands. The Faroes are made up of 18 islands, not 10 as previously stated.

I thought the Faroe islands were in Scotland. What an exciting trip it will be! Make sure you take some thick pullovers, it might be cold out there.

had this information:
The main time for tourism is summer, from June to August, when days are endlessly long, the weather relatively passable, and most tourist facilities open.
I will be going just a bit before that, but then again I am going to visit a friend, which makes all the difference!
Who knows – I might just be swept away by the islands’ beauty and wind!

Maria,
take the most of the time and experiences. That will never take from you. It’s an investment for life. Your own patrimony. It does not get devaluated in the markets. Fill your suitcases with things that will feed your soul when you’re older and those of others too….
Gabriela from ARGENTINA.
ps: Thiugh we’re in the same boat in terms of work…our situatons are wide apart… I’m fightting to keep my business alive with all efforts… and my two kids…

to Gabriela,
Hope things will turn around for you soon! I do remember my share of difficult years, but I had no kids then.
Traveling is a great way to recreate oneself and I hope to come back richer: with a suitcase full of new impressions, precious memories and silly laughter.

Sorry to be pedantic, but Ingmar Bergman was a recluse on Fårö, and island off the coast of Sweden, and as far as I know has no connection with the Faroe Islands (of which there are 18, and not 10).

Neil, thanks for pointing both items out.
I learned about my first mistake – in regards to Ingmar Bergman – while I was on the Faroes and asking the locals about him.
Why I wrote 10 islands and not 18, I do not know. I thought I had done my research properly. I will have to add an edit under the post.
Thanks for being a careful reader!
