Maria’s Beer Balcony in Germany

Yesterday evening, I had one of my closest friends over. Come to think of it, this was only her second time to visit us. We usually go out together and rarely meet on home ground. Some working women like us are just not into entertaining at home.

Rhiannon did point out though that the wooden sign ‘Maria’s Beer Balcony’ needs a make over, because the beer glass is painted in black and hardly visible on the dark blue background. We looked at the ‘white foam’ floating downwards, which resembles more a tooth or a dripping cloud.

Yes, we had wine to toast to the arrival of a new baby in the family.

Maria’s Beer Balcony in Germany

This is beer balcony photo #7. Considering I started this series two weeks ago, and only went back to photos dating from early May of this year, there have been quite a few friends coming to see us.

This time, we have my husband’s brother Rich and his son Eric from Paris sitting on the balcony.

ICE travel brings family closer together in about four and a half hours between Paris and Frankfurt.

As usual, these family gatherings are good for the heart and soul (… and stomach, too).

My brother came by two days ago and we spent the evening on the balcony. We had light beer on the dark balcony, but there was also a little light from the living room and we also had some candles lit. My iPad camera wouldn’t recognize this, though.

We were sharing stories on the balcony till 0:30!

He is a regular visitor, because we are not only sister and brother, but good friends as well.

This visit was actually for a good-bye beer. My fairly longtime English friend (we have been friends for about five years, which is long in expat circles) has since then moved to Munich, one of the cities claiming to be the Bierhauptstadt (beer capital).

I hope to get to see Jeannette for a beer in Munich before she moves on again!

By the way, here is something I learned today:

*Take a nonalcoholic Weißbier, add Zitronenlimonade ( carbonated soft drink, especially sweet lemon-flavored drinks) and you have a Russ’n (coll. for Russen = Russian)

Wonder what a combination of an alcoholic Weißbier with Limonade would produce, a Tartar maybe?

Munich is famous for its Weizenbier (German), but in the southern regions of Germany and Austria, only ask for a Weissbier or you will get funny looks.

Here we go again. This time, my best Japanese friend, whom I had met while living in Maryland in the early 90s, came by for a visit.

I have been to her parents’ home in Nagasaki a few times, but we seldom get a chance to meet up in the States (conflicting schedules). But this time around, at the end of her one-year-trip around the world, she visited us in Oberursel.

The weather was not too grand around the end on June, but we still managed to do our Kanpai! (spelled with an n, but pronounced with an m) on the balcony.
