Roman Fort Saalburg

Friday, August 14th, 2009

On the weekend of 15 and 16 August 2009, the Römerkastell Saalburg opens its gates on both days from 11:00 until 16:00 for bread baking Roman style.

Saturday’s visitors may buy bread or help make their own bread (PANIFICIUM – BROTBACKEN). Sunday’s visitors are reduced to watching bread being made as this is the first time beer is used in the process. (Well, we put yeast into beer, why not put beer into yeast?)

On Sunday visitors can also participate in tours (at noon and 2:00 p.m.) related to the history of bread making and the running of the mills. Other tours are also being offered on the same day – some for adults and some for children. The archeological park and museum are open as well from 9:00 – 6:00 p.m.

The entrance fee to the Saalburg is € 5 for adults, € for children, and € 10 for a family pass.

Sitting just next to the Limes World Heritage site, the Roman Fort symbolizes the ancient frontier between the Roman Empire and the Germanic tribal territories.

Hotel Sonnenhof in Oberstedten/Oberursel

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

I learned of this hotel when we once held a charity meeting there in the evening.

It is located a bit outside the old village part of Oberstedten, which places it in a very quiet location. The hotel has a fairly big garden with lots of trees and spots to lounge around. From the hotel, it only takes a few minutes to walk to main street where you find the local guesthouses.

Based on its location, it is convenient for trips to the Nature Park Hochtaunus, to the Roman Fort Saalburg and to the renowned spa town Bad Homburg.

Frankfurt City (20 km), the Frankfurt Airport (25 km), and most other places are accessible by public transportation.

Visit Hotel Sonnenhof for more information.
