Review for Inn on Frederick in St. Andrews, Canada

We spent two nights at the Inn on Frederick in St. Andrews. It has the perfect location sitting in the center of town, but yet one block away from Main Street, so it is fairly quiet. It is also in walking distance  – just cross Main Street – to Passamaquoddy Bay.

We had booked the vacation home as the price for two double rooms at the same inn was almost equal to the price of the house, and yes, this was the better choice for us.

The innkeeper, Mr. Jay Chung, is a very accommodating fellow. Don’t be fooled by his college-age looks – he’s got a 16-year daughter, who helped serve breakfast in the morning.

I mostly enjoyed the privacy of the porch.

We made very little use of the livingroom and kitchen downstairs, but mostly ate out.

The inn’s breakfast, we all agreed on, was phenomenal. The first morning, we had an omelet wrapped in crepe, with fresh fruit and yoghurt on the side.

The second morning’s breakfast was just as inviting to our eyes.

And yes, we slept well in this air conditioned house during this very hot weekend of 33 C. Our son used the jacuzzi a couple of times, we had our rooms cleaned and refurbished each day, and we had a very pleasant time there.

I highly recommend it, if you come here as a family.

New Housing in Oberursel

These two housing developments are currently built in Oberursel.

Projekt Heidegarten on Hohemarkstrasse

The name Heidegarten is taken from its location: the housing is being built at the corner of Hohemarkstrasse and Im Heidegraben,
with more than 80 apartments, ranging from one-bedroom to four-bedroom apartments (some in penthouse style). A few apartments on the ground floor are also suitable for commercial use.

For more information, visit Oberursel Heidegarten (in German).

Projekt Am Urselbach on Hohemarkstrasse

The grounds of the former Janndorf factory have been cleared to make room for 130 apartments and houses. This is in a convenient location as the U-Bahn station is in front, Frankfurt International School (FIS) is in walking distance, and a supermarket, schools, kindergarten, etc. are just across the street.

For more information, visit Frank Am Urselbach (in German).

Oberursel is a popular place to live.

Other recent housing developments are: Camp King (2000), Ober den Birken (2006), and near the Forsthausweg – Tierheim (2008).

Review for Vacation Rental in Biarritz

On Homeaway.com, we booked our vacation rental for the most recent holiday. Our vacation home, a renovated fisher home, was in the best location we could have hoped for.

We had the one with the blue doors and shutters. What might look like weeds in front of the houses are actually wild flowers. They do look prettier on sunny days. There is a little sign above the door – Suliko (little soul) – which is the name of the house.

Everything was in walking distance – the beach, the town centre, the market, and cafés and restaurants. Sitting on the little terrace, I only had to turn my head around the hedge to see the ocean across the street.

Biarritz beach – one minute away from 9 rue Cité Cany

Our landlady, Anne, was most forthcoming in everything we needed. And she was still kind after we had to report a minor damage caused by one of our children. She was most helpful in helping settling this, like a friend.

The home had most amenities except a hair dryer. I guess we could have asked for one. We had good internet connection, plenty of coffee and wine on our arrival, and the house, though centrally located, is in a very quiet neighborhood.

Parking is a challenge during this time a year. We flew into Bilbao/Spain and had to get a rental car. The rental car lady tried to sell us all kinds of stuff, such as an upgrade to a station car (we could hardly find one parking space in Biarritz, let alone two!), she tried to sell us navigation for 99 euro a week (by golly, we are on holiday, I do not need to know where I am going) and she tried to sell us full-coverage insurance (we had the car parked 12 out of 14 days).

We used our legs most of the time. There is a lot of up and down walking and we felt it in the evening. Free exercise.

A couple of evenings, my husband and I grabbed a bottle of wine and just walked across the street to the beach to enjoy the sunset. There is nothing better than that.

Biarritz is a lively little town and actually, I could have stayed a bit longer.

Notes from Boscombe

As our address Inner Cliff Road indicates, our apartment is sitting right by the ocean. I can hear the waves washing ashore, but the view is obscured.

We have been getting lots of very short rain showers throughout each day. Not one of them leaves enough time to open one’s umbrella, or close one’s book. As soon as I look up, the clouds have moved over and the sun is mocking us once more.

Not knowing what to expect of the infamous British Cuisine before coming to the isles, I was surprised to find the bad reputation the British Cuisine once held is dying out fast. There are so many good cafes, bistros, and restaurants around here, with some of them offering fusion food, local delicacies, and ethnic dishes. We eat very well around here.

Around the pier area, where we reside, some of the cafes, bistros and restaurants are sophisticated and a bit pricier. But leaving the bay area and walking up the hill into Boscombe town, one encounters the real local life. The pedestrian zone in the shopping area is often full of litter. Some stores are closed or look run down. A few locals have taken to drink very early and raise their voices in public. My daughter has learned a few cuss words she had not heard before.

Most downtown residents of Boscombe look rather poor compared to the plush clientele around the pier area. It has also been a while since I have been served by a cashier missing teeth. Just made me realize the things we take for granted in socialized medicine in Germany.

I have also found the Brits to be less environmentally aware than the Germans. Of course, I would not expect anyone else to sort out the trash like the Germans do. But the British salesclerks hand out plastic bags as if there were no tomorrow. I have to rush my prepared phrase to stop them from bagging my purchase.

The British English is another story. Well, this is probably what they say about my American English spoken with a German accent. Then again, some think I am Dutch.

Speaking of Dutch and going Dutch– the British landlords must have had some bad experience with previous tenants. We were left with an inventory list, stating each single item in the kitchen, e.g. six forks, six knives, six spoons, two wooden spoons, etc. This makes me wonder if the British vacationers  (most of them are here by car) do take things away.

On the other hand, some basic items were not supplied, such as drying towels in the kitchen and it took me close to two hours to find some at a shop. There was no soap in the bathroom, no paper towels in the kitchen, no sugar in the bowl. I’d suppose most vacationers bring this along in their car or know where to buy things in the morning. We didn’t as we came here by plane Sunday night and it took most of our Monday morning to get the basics.

Other vacation homes we had rented in the past (e.g. Crete, Azores. Provence) not only came with a functional kitchen, but also with a „Welcome Package“ including a bottle of water and wine, bread, butter, jam and cheese, among other things. Oh well, this kind of welcome marketing has not reached the Boscome agents yet.

Nevertheless, the landscape is wonderful around here. There are so many walks to take along the beach, and on walkways along the cliffs, The weather, including the sudden rain showers, suits me well and spending my free time reading on the underground patio, while listening to the ocean waves, is very soothing. I hear the sea gulls, the wind rustling in the trees, and I think of the little boy flying his kite on Honeycombe Beach yesterday afternoon.

Rental Home on Faial

Our preferred way of spending the holidays is to rent a whole house for our family. This time we found our holiday home at azoreshigh which offers self-catering rental homes on Faial (among other related items).

The home we had rented, Casa do Vale, in Almoxarife is a beautiful traditional house, was modernised, extended, and lies in a sheltered valley. Walking to the black sand beach only took two minutes!!

In the morning we would wake up with lots of bird singing and farm animal greetings. The house stands at the far end of one of the village roads. After Casa do Vale, the road turns into a dirt road…

Welcome to Casa Do Vale!

azoreshigh has a good selection of rental opportunities.

Edited 23 March 2013: Our former rental home is no longer on the list. But I hope you find something you like.
