Beer Garden Business in Germany

The beer garden season has no official opening date. Whenever the weather turns nice, every Kneipe (pub) with an outdoor setting, moves its tables and chairs outside. This spring, we got to sit in the beer garden as early as the beginning of April.

Beer garden in Germany

The pub Zum Adler in downtown Oberursel is not your typical beer garden. This is an old building off the old main street, and the proprietor is known for his homemade Apfelwein (alcoholic apple cider, what else – we are in Germany).

The benches are lined up in the courtyard entrance, which had to be high enough to let the loads of apples come through by tractor. Guess nowadays he has found a different route for his apples to come in.

Beer garden business might be down this week as the temperature has dropped to 18°C (65 F). This morning it was chilly with 7°C (45F). If you are heading to Germany, bring some warm clothing, just in case.

Oberems in the Taunus Mountains

At the end of yesterday’s drive through the Taunus region, we stopped at a cozy looking guest house/pub/restaurant called Zum Deutschen Haus located in Oberems ( a suburb of Glashütten).

Our teenagers settled for French fries, whereas  my husband and I decided to share one dinner, not being very hungry this late in the afternoon.

From the menu at "Zum Deutschen Haus"

We ordered a Karre Mist (a cart load of manure), which consisted of tenderloin in mushroom gravy, served with French fries and salad.  And like the name of the dish indicated, it was served in a trolley. The food was splendid and we will have to eat there again soon!

It was a bit difficult to leave this place. It had been so warm and cozy inside, the beer was good, and it had started snowing again. Well, there will definitely be a next time!

Goose Fat on German Rye

A few nights ago, we went to our favorite pub Zum Adler in Oberursel again. This time,  additional dishes offered next to the regular Speisekarte, included a Gänseschmalzbrot (goose fat on dark bread) for € 1,50.

I had never tasted goose fat in my life and decided to try it. It was really good, but should only be eaten twice a year. It looked like regular clear fat (with an orange tint) and is best accompanied by dry white wine. But of course, I had already ordered my regular beer.

For some, Werner Erbacher’s pub Zum Adler is the zweite Wohnzimmer (second living room). The bar might be lined with drop-ins, such as the one in the photo, but regulars crowd the Stammtisch (regulars’ table). I have talked to some who go there every day!

Irish Pub in Oberursel

My husband and I try to go out every Friday night. Yesterday evening we managed to get away for an hour and a half which we spent at the only Irish Pub in Oberursel. I believe MacGowan’s Irish Pub opened in March 2009, or was it 2008?

The staff is very good and I should have complimented them for this yesterday evening, but I was too Guinness-happy when we left.  I had asked our waitress for a dinner recommendation and got an authentic one – the cooks are from Bangladesh, so why not try one of the Indian dishes? I did, and the Chicken Biryanni was excellent. My husband had a Lammhaxe (lamb chop in whiskey sauce) with homemade fries and he was pleased, too. This could very well become our regular early Friday night hang-out, especially if we can get a table near the fire place (try getting there before 8 p.m.)

Once in a while, they have quiz night. Some people like it, some don’t, so check beforehand. Last time we were there, we had a gathering of Wer kennt Wen and it was difficult to get acquainted during quiz time. Nevertheless, I had fun and made second place!

I like to take my out-of-country visitors to authentic German pubs, but this Irish Pub is getting added to my list of Places-to-show around Oberursel as well.
