U.S. Army Halloween Parties at Mainberg Castle in the 1980s and 1990s

The Mainberg Castle historian, Thomas Horling, is looking for any information, photos, and keepsakes, relating to Halloween parties held by the U.S. Army back in the time of the late 1980s up to early 2000.

A Salute to the Schweinfurt Military – Multimedia Archives

Team Schweinfurt presents The History of the Army in Schweinfurt in a slide show.

To keep its history alive, Team Schweinfurt set up this online photograph exhibition, “Salute to Schweinfurt: 1945-2014,” a tribute spanning almost 70 years of the U.S. Army in Schweinfurt. The project is meant to educate future generations and demonstrate the army’s service in Schweinfurt.

Deadline for submitting photos ends today (no April Fools’ joke either), but I’m sure they’d welcome more photo contributions.

Schweinfurt Military Closing and Future Photo Exhibition

I found the following call for photo donations on American Soldiers Monument in Schweinfurt via Facebook.

Quoting from their page:

“In response to the pending closure (Fall 2014) of US Army Garrison Schweinfurt, the garrison public affairs office is trying to establish a photo exhibition chronicling the history of the Army in Schweinfurt. But due to the lack of an existing archive, they need your help. So we are putting out the call for photos to be donated to the exhibit.

They are especially looking for photos that prominently display landmarks of the various installations, the local training area, past units, etc. For more information about the project or to donate your photos, please contact the USAG Schweinfurt PAO Office at

Or post them here and we will send them in for you. Try to include a DTG and a little background info on the photo if you can (where, what, who, etc). When the project is done they will post everything on Flickr and we’ll share the link with you guys. Thanks everyone for your help.”

Oberursel Christmas Market

Yesterday afternoon, we visited the Oberursel Christmas market, and it marked the first time we came with our children.

The older one is attending college in the U.K. and the younger one went to the Christmas market in Strasbourg/France… Needless to say, we were able to pass the Crepes stand and many others without stopping. We surely had much time to spend quite a bit of money! The most ever. We bought a creche and Christmas ornaments from the Erzgebirge for presents. We also had Fischbrötchen (this German delicacy which most foreigners despise), photo here at Marions Kochbuch: Fischbrötchen.

The old steam locomotive is still running, mostly occupied by young riders.

It was a cold day at the market, but as Germans sell Schnaps and Glühwein as early as midday, it surely was no problem for some.

Sunday, 02 Dec 2012,  is the last day of the Oberursel Christmas market and the hours are: 12:00 – 21:00.

Bye bye, Henninger Turm

Frankfurt’s most famous tower, the Henninger Turm, will be torn town and replaced by a modern one. Time has taken its toll on the tower – it is over fifty years old and getting morose. The former silo of the Henninger brewery is getting readied for a modification.

Plans are to rebuild the tower in a greener way, but also a bit wider and deeper, as well as keeping its keg restaurant on the top. Up to 130 apartments are in the designing stage for this cubist Passivhaus, with each square meter at a cost of € 4.000,–

Until 1974, the Henninger Turm was the tallest building in the city of Frankfurt.

In the early 70s, I took a bus trip with my aunt to see Frankfurt. The highlights were the Frankfurt Airport and the Henninger Turm. I remember pressing my nose against the windows at the airport to see an airplane take off and we all went ooh and aah. The next stop was the restaurant on the top of the tower – again, we country folks went ooh and aah – with the restaurant turning.
