Airport Transfer Service between Oberursel and Frankfurt

Over the years, with all our family’s and friends’ comings and goings, we have often used an airport transfer service. The average fee is euro 35, and this includes up to four people (based on our family experience).

For the past three years or so, we had used My Car24. As a matter of fact, we used them just two weeks ago for our round-trip to London. We had always been served well in regards to reliability and good service. And I like booking online, as I get a written confirmation.

But this was tricky last time, when I made our reservation Monday morning, and did not get confirmation by e-mail until late Tuesday evening – for an early Wednesday morning flight.

Since then, at least, they have added this recommendation to their website:

Please allow at least 48 hours to process your reservation.

Making an airport transfer reservation is usually one of the very last things I remember to do. A more than 48 hour-advance booking does not sit well with me, nor my life-style.

In the meantime, I have reverted to using Kilic for today’s airport transfer. His office still takes reservations the old-fashioned way – by phone. He had also served us very well over the last 15 years or so.

The following list is a compilation of available airport transfer service companies around the area. The top two, Kilic and My Car24, I have used myself. The others are various recommendations by locals.

The Source of the Seine River

The source of the Seine River is located in Source-Seine, Burgundy on the Plateau of Langres in the department of Côtes d’Or. The park area is nicely kept and ideal for picnics and strolls.

This man-made grotto, built in 1865 above the Seine source, houses a statue of the nymph Sequana.

I did a bit of water-tasting.

We also passed through this little town, Billy-lès-Chanceaux, where we saw a somewhat bigger version of the Seine.

Unfortunately, I do not have a photo of the full width of the Seine River. This one will have to do.

In Paris, the river’s width varies from 30m to 200m.

This photo is from 2014, and the padlocks are gone by now, removed by the city in June 2015.

Maria’s Beer Balcony in Germany

We had a spontaneous visit by two very dear friends to watch the soccer match Germany-Italy together at our home. Before the match started at 9pm, I got Peter to sit with me on the beer balcony.

My, oh my, what an exciting soccer match this was! Italy and Germany both have very good teams. But in the end, it was down to nerve-wracking penalty shootouts. Italy played a strong game against Germany, the current world champions, but we finally lifted the spell and beat Italy for the first time in history.

Score: Germany – Italy 1:1 (1:1, 0:0) n.V., 6:5 i.E.

i.E. = im Elfmeterschießen (penalty shootouts)

September Notes from Istanbul

Based on our walking instructions, we had to pass by the ‘University of Istanbul’ on our way to the Grand Bazaar.

It seems like nooks and crevices are filled with vendors on almost any given day.

Flying Boat Museum in Foynes, Ireland

When my travel companion suggested visiting the ‘Flying Boat Museum’ in Foynes, I was quite surprised. I had never heard of ‘flying boats’ before, but it was well worth our visit.

This photo was taken while sitting outside the museum’s café. Foynes is a small village of 600 residents (last reported in 2006).

The first part of the museum has many interesting paraphernalia, such as showing how Irish Coffee was invented at the terminal building in Foynes, how two sisters both worked at the airport and became the envy of many Irish girls, how all the passengers and flight crew were housed, and much more.

Stepping inside the Yankee Clipper is the second part of the museum visit.

It had dining facilities, sleeping cots, and was quite spacious compared to today’s air travel.
