Schweinfurt Purchases Ledward Barracks

The city of Schweinfurt has purchased the entire compound of Ledward Barracks, the former U.S. military installation, from the Institute for Federal Real Estate (BImA). According to city officials, the municipal council approved the purchase in its meeting on Tuesday.

Subsequent to the notarization of the deed, Mayor Sebastian Remelé and the representatives of the BImA will discuss further details in the main conference room of the city hall on Thursday. Municipal press spokesperson and finance officer, Anna Barbara Keck, stated that the purchase of approximately 26 hectares (64 acres) of land will secure plans for converting the former installation in addition to meeting the city’s developmental needs.

One segment – 4 hectares (9 acres) – of the former barracks’ area, including six buildings, will be leased for a period of 5 years to the state of Bavaria for the purpose of operating a reception facility for persons seeking asylum.

Farewell to Schweinfurt U.S. Military

This is for all the U.S. troops who had been stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany or had passed through it on their tour.

For a trip down memory lane, watch this clip Abschied der US-Armee aus Schweinfurt (U.S. Army farewell from Schweinfurt).

Bye, Bye, Schweinfurt

The remaining U.S. troops are soon to leave Schweinfurt for good, signaling the end of an era. For all of you who have served and worked in Schweinfurt, these photos are for you.

The SKF building, one of Schweinfurt’s landmarks as you come into the city. Not a pretty one, but you know you’re almost there.

Those two towers below, you will surely not miss. But again, they served as landmarks. Years ago, heading to Schweinfurt from Frankfurt with two small children in the back seat, we would lower the car window to let in some cooler air (we had no A/C back then) after we got off the Autobahn.

With that, we’d get a good whiff of country air, then the kids would wake up, see Luke & Duke, and exclaim “We’re almost there!”

Schweinfurt is surrounded by so many villages with Bierfests and Weinfests. One of our favorite one has always been Wipfeld and its neighboring villages. We love the vineyards, the view onto the Main River, and the quaint little fests of all kinds.

Last, but not least. Some of you might miss the Franconian beer. Then dream of this one.

To all the short-timers out there – listen to this song, when you’re in the mood.

A Salute to the Schweinfurt Military – Multimedia Archives

Team Schweinfurt presents The History of the Army in Schweinfurt in a slide show.

To keep its history alive, Team Schweinfurt set up this online photograph exhibition, “Salute to Schweinfurt: 1945-2014,” a tribute spanning almost 70 years of the U.S. Army in Schweinfurt. The project is meant to educate future generations and demonstrate the army’s service in Schweinfurt.

Deadline for submitting photos ends today (no April Fools’ joke either), but I’m sure they’d welcome more photo contributions.
