Oberursel Christmas Market

Yesterday afternoon, we visited the Oberursel Christmas market, and it marked the first time we came with our children.

The older one is attending college in the U.K. and the younger one went to the Christmas market in Strasbourg/France… Needless to say, we were able to pass the Crepes stand and many others without stopping. We surely had much time to spend quite a bit of money! The most ever. We bought a creche and Christmas ornaments from the Erzgebirge for presents. We also had Fischbrötchen (this German delicacy which most foreigners despise), photo here at Marions Kochbuch: Fischbrötchen.

The old steam locomotive is still running, mostly occupied by young riders.

The Christmas market is between the Marktplatz (market square) and Rathausplatz (city hall square).

I had to pass on this food – but not the photo opportunity.

It was a cold day at the market, but as Germans sell Schnaps and Glühwein as early as midday, it surely was no problem for some.

Sunday, 02 Dec 2012,  is the last day of the Oberursel Christmas market and the hours are: 12:00 – 21:00.

Sunday Morning in Biarritz

Biarritz, a French vacation resort on the Atlantic coast, is a busy little town. There are so many people out and about to do their shopping on Sunday morning. Germany, in comparison, looks like a ghost town around this time of day.

In France, all centre ville shops and markets are open until 13:00. I had almost forgotten how much fun shopping in France can be, in every sense of the way.

Fruits confits – wonderful display at the marché

Dried peppers – a local specialty

Most shopping is done on foot and beware of parking difficulties when coming to Biarritz.

Hard to find a spot and when you do, use your feet around town.

Oberursel Christmas Market Impressions

The snow we had for the past few days has mostly melted by now. But what little we had was perfect for our four-day Christmas market (which ends this evening).

Here are a few photos I took two days ago.

This was one of the better Christmas markets as we had snow instead of rain!

Christmas Market Oberursel 2010

Our four-day Christmas market in Oberursel will run from Thursday to Sunday (25 Nov – 28 Nov).

The current temperature of only 4°C will surely be a good match for all the mulled wine drinkers. There is also light snow in the forecast for this week as the temperature keeps dropping. Sounds promising!

Dates and times of the Weihnachtsmarkt:

25.11. – 25.11.2010 von 16:00 bis 21:00 Uhr
26.11. – 26.11.2010 von 14:00 bis 22:00 Uhr
27.11. – 27.11.2010 von 12:00 bis 22:00 Uhr
28.11. – 28.11.2010 von 12:00 bis 21:00 Uhr

The market has about 80 vendors ready to sell their merchandise, including food and beverages.

Sunday Market near Oberursel

Shopping for a last-minute pumpkin took us to Hofgut Hohenwald located between Oberursel and Kronberg.

Next to flowers and vegetables, they also sell fresh bread, cheese, cold cuts, dairy products, and many other goods. This is the perfect place for expats to shop on Sundays, e.g. on your way home from the airport.

I was looking for their hours of operation, but could find none listed for Sundays. We were there around noon today and the place was busy. They might keep the same hours for Sundays as they do for Saturdays (8:00 – 17:00), but this is just a guess.

There is lots of parking space as well.

We ended up with three medium sized pumpkins, two of which need to get carved yet. The acorn squash I purchased will go directly to the oven:-)
