‘Walking Woman’ Sculpture at the Bad Homburg Train Station

A little while back, I took the S5 train from Bad Homburg to Oberursel. When I first saw the sculpture, I had to take a double look. When I looked closer, I was really touched by its beauty.

The art work ‘Walking Woman’ by the British artist Sean Henry was part of his Blickachsen (line of sight) Exhibition in 2013.

The city of Bad Homburg acquired this art work for € 100.000, and of course, some found reasons to oppose this purchase.

What I like about her:

She has neither handbag nor smart phone. But based on her stride, she knows where she’s going.

Best Roast Pork at the Kronenhof in the Oberursel Area

For the past three weeks, I had been craving German style roast pork (German: Schweinebraten). But it has been too hot and humid to make this dish at home, and no one else in the family wanted it. So I was waiting for Schweinebraten Wetter (roast pork weather), which is a somewhat cooler day to have such a filling dish at a nearby restaurant or Biergarten.

That perfect day never came, but I did not want to wait any longer. We braved the heat and humidity this late afternoon, and went to the Kronenhof * in Bad Homburg (a 10-minute drive).

This was the best pork roast I’ve ever had around here in the whole state of Hesse. The gravy was superb, and the meat so tender. These bread dumplings are a nice variation to the regular potato dumplings.

On the menu, look for: Schweinebraten in Biersoße mit Semmelknödel und Krautsalat (Roast pork in beer sauce with bread dumplings and coleslaw).

My husband opted for the prime boiled beef with strips of vegetables, horseradish sauce and boiled potatoes. Look for the German term ‘Gesottener Tafelspitz’, also with a choice of green sauce (local herb sauce specialty) or horseradish sauce.

For my foreign friends and readers – they also offer the popular ‘Grilled knuckle of pork with Sauerkraut or coleslaw’. Guten Appetit!

Taxi Fares Frankfurt to Oberursel

We had some stateside visitors arrive by taxi from the Frankfurt airport to our small town of Oberursel. So this post might be of interest for passengers  from Oberursel leaving for or arriving from the Frankfurt airport

My friend then proceeded to tell me about this argumentative taxi driver, who constantly had to check his map to find his way to Oberursel. He supposedly got lost on his way to Oberursel, a town full of expats who often use  taxi service. In the end, he was charged € 70 for a ride that usually runs € 45.

I wish I would have told him what fare to expect and to settle the price beforehand.

This is what I started doing after I got ripped off once, arriving at the airport overly tired, in a daze, and relieved – and trusting mankind.

For his return trip, we called our local air Flughafenkurier (airport transfer service) to arrange his transfer back to the airport. This time the charge was € 32, our friend not only enjoyed the ride speeding down the Autobahn at 180 km/hr, but also the  presence of a pleasant driver.

I even had called the service somewhat late Friday night, it was 11 p.m., to arrange the pick-up.

We have used Flughafenkurier Kilic for years now and this business is very recommendable. He does not have a website, he operates on a smallscale (and mostly out of Oberursel and Bad Homburg), but here is his phone number:

Airport transfer service: 0163 – 64 00 811

Next time, you arrive in Frankfurt, you may want to call him to reserve a ride.

Edit: As of May 2013, the fare between Oberursel and Frankfurt Airport is € 33.00

Beer and Soccer at Null Zwo

Last night we went to Null Zwo in Bad Homburg to watch the game Germany – Australia. Great game, especially with Germany beating Australia 4:0.

Null Zwo’s Biergarten in Bad Homburg

Again, the Biergarten was full with people eating and drinking. There were no signs of a slowing economy.

Our waitress was dressed appropriately.

A plate of roast beef

This dish was advertised as Roast Beef “Englisch”, yes, Englisch in quotation marks. At € 12,50, this almost equaled the price of four tall glasses of beer.

We had a very good time watching the game with friends while cheering for Germany. Our teenage son reminded me a few times to behave better and refrain from rooting too loudly. What would I do without him?

Children seldom misquote. In fact, they usually repeat word for word what you shouldn’t have said.
