Oberursel Christmas Market

Yesterday afternoon, we visited the Oberursel Christmas market, and it marked the first time we came with our children.

The older one is attending college in the U.K. and the younger one went to the Christmas market in Strasbourg/France… Needless to say, we were able to pass the Crepes stand and many others without stopping. We surely had much time to spend quite a bit of money! The most ever. We bought a creche and Christmas ornaments from the Erzgebirge for presents. We also had Fischbrötchen (this German delicacy which most foreigners despise), photo here at Marions Kochbuch: Fischbrötchen.

The old steam locomotive is still running, mostly occupied by young riders.

The Christmas market is between the Marktplatz (market square) and Rathausplatz (city hall square).

I had to pass on this food – but not the photo opportunity.

It was a cold day at the market, but as Germans sell Schnaps and Glühwein as early as midday, it surely was no problem for some.

Sunday, 02 Dec 2012,  is the last day of the Oberursel Christmas market and the hours are: 12:00 – 21:00.

More Construction on Hohemarkstrasse – November 2012 update

Access to Im Rosengärtchen, An der Waldlust and Hohemark

This coming weekend (9-12 Nov 2012), there will be construction on Hohemarkstrasse where the train tracks cross the road between the U-Bahn stations Im Rosengärtchen and Kupferhammerweg.

The good news is that it should only take place between 22:00 Friday night and 05:00 Monday morning.

The bad news is that the road will be completely closed with the detour going via A 661. The tram line U 3 is also involved and ends at the Kupferhammer station, but there will be buses from Kupferhammer  going to Hohemark (end of the line).

Notes from Germany

While the U.S. is in dire straits with Frankenstorm, we sit here in Europe and contemplate our first early snow and frost.

At the same time, our supermarkets shelves are still well stocked and the next best thing we have to worry about is when to put on our winter tires.

All is well – there is frost everywhere, we have turned up our heat, and I enjoy the total quietness around here. No winds, no gusts, no sounds of flooding, etc.

I have been following my friends’ updates and photos on Facebook, and it is scary.

Here is my own antidote – beauty in winter time

First October Snow in Germany

Quite a few people might be rubbing their eyes this morning when they look out the window. I did so as I stood in front of the coffee maker and looking out the window, I saw tons of tiny flakes being hurled around.

Combined with a strong wind, the snow is changing directions every few seconds.

Here in Oberursel, we are at the foot of the Taunus Mountains, but I personally cannot remember ever having seen snow as early as October, at least not in Germany.

It is a beautiful sight.

Just for the record – today is 27 October 2012.
