When I first saw these photos in its current state, I was a bit shocked. Not surprisingly though, reconstruction is underway, and my initial response in seeing this stripped and gutted was a bit of melancholy.
We used to party around that area in the late 1980s. Those were the glory days for us. 🙂
These photos were taken by Marion ZĂĽrl, and with her friendly permission, I get to share them here with you.
Thank you for sharing. My stepfather was stationed there from December, 1974 through November, 1975. I was 8 years old at the time, but I remember many of these buildings, and walking along those sidewalks hundreds of times on our way, back and forth to the bus depot. We lived off base in Grafenrheinfeld. I have many great memories of being in Germany. Unfortunately we were too poor to do any traveling. I would love to make it back some day.
I was wondering if ledward barracks was still standing I was there from 72 to 75 was in the 1st and 30th infantry battalion maintenance co. Loved being there.brings back memories and would have loved to return to see this place.
Dennis, the group ‘Memories of being Stationed in Schweinfurt and those who helped create them’ had a post with photos of the most recent changes just a few days ago.

Everytime I think of my time in the Army my most cherished thoughts are of this place and how I felt being a small town county boy from Texas being so far from home and getting to experience a new country and culture. I was stationed here from 2006-2008 with the Blue Spaders and came to love this place. I often think of visiting it with my wife to show her around and recall all those crazy nights out with my brothers .
