A week ago in late August 2016, we passed by Ledward Barracks in Schweinfurt once again. This is a selection of the photos I took at the time.
Ledward Barracks has been closed since September 2014.
Coming down the Kasernenweg towards Niederwerrner Strasse.
The Main Gate with its name is still there.
Driving down Niederwerrner Strasse.
Between 11 April 1945 and 19 September 2014, 100.000 U.S. soldiers and their 300.000 dependents came through Schweinfurt.
I was one of those 100,000 soldiers from 1983-1985. My time with A Battery 1/76 FA is a memory that I will never forget and one that I am forever thankful for. It never occurred to me that I might not ever return to Schweinfurt when I left in early 1985. Heck, I was 20 years old and the whole wold was in front of me. Surely there would be time. Now, 32 years later the barracks are being torn down to create space for a new college campus and the time to return has gone. Another lesson that one should never put off until tomorrow anything that can be done today. Rock of the Marne!
Wow, I am a bit sorry things change. I loved Schweinfurt and Germany! I know what they will make will be great! Yet still I am sad to see it go away. My family loved it too. We took plenty of pictures fortunately. Schweinfurt was great. Germany really has a great layout for all the towns I visited. Easy transportation well maintained and most towns can be in a tourist catalog. Beautiful country!
I also served 1983 to 1985 in the 176 field artillery Schweinfurt West Germany Charlie battery it was a great time, love to go back there, I enjoyed every minute of it ,Dale Ringlein, Goodrich , Michigan. Rock of the Marne.
I was there in 1979 to1980 and really loved it ,I was @ deepen Dant. Worked at. Conn officers club
