Trout Farm in Oberursel/Oberstedten forest

Whenever we have out-of-town visitors and want to take them to a special place, we choose the trout farm in the nearby forest.

They are only open on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays from 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., so make sure to get there early unless you have made a reservation (06172 – 351 19). Reservations are only taken for indoor-dining.

The menu is – as the name of the restaurant indicates – full of trout dishes and a smaller selection of other hardy German dishes. Prices are moderate.

If you are walking, I recommend the local schnaps Krabbeldiewandnuff (a supposedly healthy herbal digestive drink…). Translated, this Hessian product’s name means: Crawl up the wall – which you might just do after you’ve downed this 50% alcoholic energizer.

We love to sit outside in the summer time, but be prepared to wait to secure a table. You can’t reserve a table outside.

Food is always good, service is often good and quick, and the setting is ideal being in the forest. There is also a small playground for younger children.  Peacocks are striding around in cages, chickens are pecking about freely, and you see boars lolling in the mud behind good fences. The view from the restaurant is onto the trout ponds itself.

It is a nice 50-minute walk from the northern end of Oberursel, through the forest towards Oberstedten, and only about a 10-minute drive by car.

If you decide to walk there, you will have plenty of chances to ask for directions. The forest invites other like-minded walkers, so you’ll be able to ask for directions as well.
