40 Minutes in Heidelberg

Ever since we moved to Oberursel/Germany in 1995, we have gone to Heidelberg two or three times a year to visit very good friends of ours, whom we had initially met while living in Japan. We would go to Heidelberg for New Year’s Eve parties and BBQ parties in their rented garden plot. We got to visit Rohrbach and Kirchheim quite often, but never Heidelberg city and its castle.

Thanks to another stateside relative visiting Germany for the first time, we made some extra time yesterday to visit a bit of Heidelberg before going to our friends’ BBQ party.

Some traffic lights in Heidelberg have the formerly East-German Ampelmännchen in use.

There were more tourists present than locals. When passing people, we often heard foreign languages. Most Germans in Heidelberg were all dressed up – for weddings!! Heidelberg is a romantic place to get married, so we saw many well dressed people, who were part of wedding ceremonies leaving the Rathaus, posing for pictures on the Marktplatz, holding sparkling wine glasses in hand.

Strange, to live to close to this beautiful city (one hour by car from Frankfurt), but yet it took us 14 years to actually do some sight-seeing…
