Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney 2009
In the media we read about the tornado in Spain, masses of snow in London, icy highways in Italy, and massive traffic jams in Belgium.
And then there is this year’s groundhog, Phil, giving us the same type of weather forecast for the United States of America; that is if you believe in this offbeat weather forecast tradition, which again drew tens of thousands of people to a small forest in Punxsutawney/Pennsylvania on 2 Feb 2009, Groundhog Day.
The spectators watch the groundhog being lured out of its hibernation on that day. If it steps into sunshine and we can see its shadow, then winter will stay with us for another six weeks.
I guess Phil has gone international as this wintery forecast also applies to Europe at the moment, having a significant effect on the travel business as well.
