Frankfurt Airport and Holiday Check-in
Frankfurt, the city which sleeps 500.000 people on a regular night, has a daytime turnover of 2.000.000, either working, passing through, shopping, etc.
And now with school break – last day of school was July 10- having started in the German states of Hesse and Rheinland-Pfalz, there is much more traffic to be expected at the airport. Up to 180.000 passengers are expected this weekend.
Allow for extra time for your check-in, as not only increased passenger traffic is expected, but also because of the airport’s new automated system. We flew three weeks ago and by the time we got to the nice lady, who does the initial checking in front of the regular check-in line, we were told to go back and get our own computerized tickets. We had totally overlooked these new and standing tall machines!
My husband was able to print out his ticket, but we had trouble getting the remaining family member tickets. The airport has supplied extra staff for this and so we waited our turn to get help. Then it was back to the nice lady who waved us through to proceed to the baggage check-in. It went smoothly, but only because we allowed extra time.
It is recommended to be at the airport check-in or 2 1/2 hours before departure. If you are from the Frankfurt area, you might also consider turning in your baggage the evening before. More information at Frankfurt Airport.

Checking in at home is a good alternative, it saves you a lot of time. When we flew to Thailand with Emirates because we had already checked in at home, we were able to jump the long queue saving us at least 20 minutes. Flying with Lufthansa last week I noticed that there were a lot more checking in machines. In fact now they’ve done away with the checking in counters, there are only the drop off bags counters.
