Review for Indian Food at Bella Italia in Oberursel

This mainly Italian restaurant Bella Italia  is run by a German/Indian husband/wife team with a couple of helpers for deliveries. Service is always excellent and we just love their Indian food! There is a wide selection of Italian food to choose from, along with one page of Indian dishes as well as some German dishes.

During our very first visit there, we had the typical month of May dish Asparagus with Potatoes as advertised on the roadside board. We did not even bother looking at the menu.

On our next visit there, we discovered a fairly good selection of Indian food in the menu. I settled for the Chicken Karma (# 165), while my husband opted for the Lamb Karma (#171).

This was excellent! What at first looks like a small portion served in the hot pot turns out to be more than plenty. We were also served a plate of vegetables with chutney, bread and dip as well.

The average wait for the main dish is about 40 minutes, I’d say. So plan a bit of time and enjoy the nibbles.

The interior is simple with a rustic touch, but comfortable. Prices are moderate.

Review for Japanese Restaurant Mangetsu in Frankfurt

Thanks to a longtime friend’s birthday celebration, we had the pleasure of spending an evening with good Japanese food and drink in Frankfurt.

We were invited to the restaurant Mangetsu (full moon), a typical Izakaya-Restaurant.

In general, an izakaya (居酒屋) is a casual Japanese drinking place which also serves food. As a matter of fact, having food with your drinks is encouraged.

We had plenty of plates on our table, ranging from bite-size eggplant, jidori (grilled chicken), hotate (scallops) to edamame (beans). Each one of our “appetizers” was delicious.

For an Izakaya, there was plenty to choose from the menu. Here are two of the pages:

The Mangetsu sushi is one of the best I have eaten in years (I had also spent three years in Japan). Very litte seaweed, fresh ingredients, and dipping each piece into the mayo/brown sauce streak made for a very smooth taste. This could be addictive.

Last, but not least, we washed down our food with Kirin beer and some Sake.

If you are looking for good food served in a casual atmosphere, then you should try Mangetsu. I know, I will be back.

Review for Greek Restaurant Tante Anna in Oberursel

This family-run Greek restaurant carries an unusual name for selling Greek cuisine. But the name Tante Anna fits the building and interior, which is old-style German on the outside, and a bit more modern on the inside.

We have been going there for many years. On hot summer days, sitting in the Biergarten under very tall chestnut trees is great. That’s when beer tastes really good. But I am digressing… There are plenty of tables and service is efficient, even on their busiest days.

Here we take a look into the main part of the dining area. The main part of the dining facilities are on the right and a bit more modern than the room on the left, reserved for smokers.

A peek into their menu.

My husband’s choice, Juwetsi, a lamb leg with Greek pasta and baked with a cheese topping.

I often order Souvlaki, one of my favorite dishes. They used to serve the meat on a skewer, but now it is removed before being served. This has definitely been changed  for the patrons’ convenience and it has also improved our eating etiquette.

In the past, occasionally a piece of Souvlaki had landed on my husband’s plate, or worse, in my beer.

Someone told me they use frozen french fries, but I am OK with this (if it is true). They taste great with tsatsiki.

Last time we patronized Tante Anna, we saw the Greek restaurant monarch residing in the dark cubbyhole, reading his newspaper and talking to the cooks through a little window, while both grown off-springs were busy running the place.
This is the way (semi)retirement used to be and always should be.

We are regulars there. And I do appreciate family-run restaurants. Their food, price/value balance, and service, are good.

Review for Restaurant Ratskeller in Oberursel

On our son’s big day (graduating from Frankfurt International School), we chose the restaurant Ratskeller in Oberursel to have our ceremonial dinner there with friends and family.

Restaurant Ratskeller in Oberursel  (entry through the gate)

We had made early reservations for 6:00 and seven people. My brother and husband chose the Ochsenbäckchen (ox cheeks/ox jowls), which were excellent. So was our Argentine beef steak, served with potato gratin and sauteed vegetables. The portions look rather small at first glance, but they are filling.

I had even withheld a bit on the bread basked (fresh and delicious) which came with a garlic dip. I could have had a couple more slices…

The service was excellent and we felt like we were regulars. Well, our friends are regulars there, so their presence made for a casual atmosphere.

The interior is rustic, but quaint. Watch for the small steps throughout the restaurant though!

The prices range from fair to high, but you get what you pay for. The food quality is superb (fresh vegetables, good choice of meat, etc). But with four people in our family, I would not be able to take them there on a regular basis, only for special occasions.

By the time we left two hours later, the garden tables were all occupied.

This restaurant is very recommendable!

Portuguese Restaurant in Oberursel

A few weeks ago, we passed this house on the way back to where we had parked our car (An der Bleiche). For some odd reason, we chose to walk a different route, which was along the creek between Eppsteiner Strasse (leading to the Marktplatz) and An der Bleiche.

Internationaler Verein Windrose e.V. Oberursel

This house, at first glance, looked like a regular residence to us – until we noticed the menu in the showcase. It featured quite a bit of seafood, some appetizers and about six steak dinners to choose from.

Yesterday evening, we went there. Since the sign above the entrance said  Internationaler Verein Windrose e.V., we first had to inquire if we needed to be members to get a meal. “No, this was changed a few years ago,” we were told. The Vereinslokal (club house) is open to the public now.

As walk-ins we got the last seats in the house (back room), where we enjoyed the best meal we have ever had in Oberursel! My husband had the Bife Brasil ( Brazilian steak with mushrooms, bacon, and shrimp in saffron sauce, served with potatoes and rice). I had Espetada mista di carne ( beef of a skewer, served with pototoes, rice, and beans). We were also served a big bowl of salad to share. The Portuguese wine EA (red and dry) was also reasonably priced at €14, 50 a bottle.

Since this is a club house, you should make reservations beforehand. A bit unorthodox, but you have to make the reservation in person (not by phone, not by e-mail), this is what their website Windrose Oberursel Vereinslokal stated. It is best to locate the restaurant beforehand anyway, because it is quite off the beaten path. The website still has the remark club house only open to members, but as I had stated earlier, this is no longer true.

The hours of operation are as follows: Wed 18:00 – 24:00, Fri 18:00 – 01:00 and Sat 18:00 – 01:00

Address: Neutorallee 18 in 61440 Oberursel

Last, but not least, this association is very engaged in helping young foreign students integrate into German school life in Oberursel and vicinity. In 2004, it was awarded the Integrationspreis by the Hochtaunuskreis. New members are always welcome.

Edit: You may also make your reservation by phone: 06171 – 3945
