This is some imporant information for all English speakers residing in Oberursel and vicinity about the Hessentag, the traffic and transportation situation in the town of Oberursel, and a few highlights of the event.
This information came from school and I removed all school-related items.
1. Traffic closures
During Hessentag, areas of Oberursel have been broken down into zones. Depending on the zone, traffic is either fully or partially prohibited. The red zones will only be accessible by car between 8 – 20 June from 6:00 – 9:30 in the morning. Please note that the red zone is closed off three days longer than the duration of the event!
The other colored zones are accessible from 10-19 June only with a special permit, which is generally only available to residents of that area. This means that parents from outside of Oberursel will not be able to drive through the center of Oberursel to get to school. For a map of the various zones, click here.
2. Public transportation
We encourage all visitors to the town center to use public transportation, which will take one to the edge of the Altstadt. All other traffic within the Altstadt is restricted to pedestrians.
• The U-Bahn and S-Bahn will be running every 15 minutes for the duration of Hessentag. The best U-Bahn access to the center of town is the stop “Oberursel Altstadt”.
• The bus lines 41 and 42 will not be able to drive through town as usual and will thus be split into separate routes above and below the closed off areas. They will travel on a 30-minute schedule.
3. Parking at Hessentag
There are two huge parking lots available during the event. For a look at their location, see P1 and P2 on this map.
• P1, which is accessible only from the Frankfurter Landstrasse, is closer to the Altstadt, but is still a 20-minute walk away.
4. Hessentag Highlights
The full program is available in German here.
We have also put a short list of some events together that do not require language skills. That information can be found here.

Graham Tappenden, from AllThingsGerman, has written a comprehensive post about getting around during the Hessentag week activities 10 – 19 June 2011.
For many residents around here in Oberursel, the Hessentagswoche seems to be the talk of the day.
I overheard customers at the super market check-out line worry about commuting on overcrowded trains. Older residents from the downtown area of Oberursel are actually leaving town during the time of the Hessentag fest.
If you are one of the brave ones and want to take partake in the festival activities, then read the following post by Graham - How to get to the Hessentag: By train

The beer garden season has no official opening date. Whenever the weather turns nice, every Kneipe (pub) with an outdoor setting, moves its tables and chairs outside. This spring, we got to sit in the beer garden as early as the beginning of April.
 Beer garden in Germany
The pub Zum Adler in downtown Oberursel is not your typical beer garden. This is an old building off the old main street, and the proprietor is known for his homemade Apfelwein (alcoholic apple cider, what else – we are in Germany).
The benches are lined up in the courtyard entrance, which had to be high enough to let the loads of apples come through by tractor. Guess nowadays he has found a different route for his apples to come in.
Beer garden business might be down this week as the temperature has dropped to 18°C (65 F). This morning it was chilly with 7°C (45F). If you are heading to Germany, bring some warm clothing, just in case.

We spent another Sunday afternoon in the garden. As always, there really isn’t that much to do except for raking leaves, barbecuing, and relaxing on the lounge chair. A hamlet in the wild, among trees, mountains, and ponds, does not require any real work.
I had a heavenly nap falling asleep to the sounds of birds singing and toads croaking in the pond just outside our garden.
A bit outside of Schloßborn, before turning on the dirt road leading to our garden, there is a new sign for drivers to watch for wandering toads.
 Krötenwanderung or Toad Crossing
Based on the decibel meter of the croaking toads coming from the pond, I would assume none of them had ventured out yet. They are safe as of now.
 Primrose
This primrose plant I had thrown into a pile of bio waste years ago. It is such a sturdy plant, it comes up every year without any care whatsoever.
Live as if you would die tomorrow, learn as if you would live forever.

I have just discovered this little gem All Things German event, listing events around the area such as in Oberursel, Bad Homburg, Kronberg, Königstein, etc.
This is where I discovered Golfing in Oberursel is available as of Sunday, 3rd April, 2011 at 11am. The Putter’s Paradise course is located in the Oberstedter Straße, in front of the restaurant Casa Primavera (not to be mistaken for Primavera downtown Oberursel!)
Just a quick question – shouldn’t the new golf course be called Putters’ Paradise instead of Putter’s Paradise?
